Black Pawn
Vusi Beauchamp (b. 1979, Johannesburg, South Africa) studied printmaking and painting at the Tshwane University of Technology and Graphic Design at Damelin. He currently lives and works in Johannesburg. Post-race, post-black, post-pop-art and post-apartheid, Vusi Mxolisi Beauchamp’s work is synonymous with imagery that depicts jarring iconographies using a provocative mixture of painting mediums and techniques. Well known for his non-conformist visual style, for his political commentary and for the deeply satirical nature of his works, Beauchamp has been creating artworks that comment on social issues and on the events that make up the social landscape of his homeland. Often controversial, his works have been described as deconstructed satirical journalism and social critique through paint. However much of the subject matter is grave and hard-hitting, humour and ironic devices remain an important element in Beauchamp’s work.
